Kay Taylor Affleck
Artist's Statement

"Animals, art and exploring nature are the greatest joys of my life. I am happiest when standing at my easel with my dogs sleeping by me feet or hiking in the foothills with my sketchbook close at hand. The hidden treasure and wonders of nature so overwhelm me that my greatest frustration is not being able to paint fast enough to capture all the images dancing in my head.

Although animals are my first love, I am inspired by a variety of subject matters from common weeds and rock to exquisite flowers and sunsets. I find it challenging to capture my subject's unique character, whether it be an elegant show horse, a curious kitten, or a shiny vase.

I am a realist and perfectionist at heart with a fascination for detail. This combination compels me to spend hours on an area trying to capture subtle nuances of color, interesting textures or intricate patterns. I like to work in layers, slowly building volume as I model form. I create as much depth as possible by pushing value and color relationships. My goal is for the viewer to feel as if he or she could reach out and touch the velvety softness of a horse's muzzle or wrap a hand around a porcelain mug I have so painstakingly recreated on paper.

Pastel is the perfect medium for me to express my love for nature and animals. I enjoy layering dots or strokes of pigment into a mosaic of rich, vibrant color in order to create the detailed realism characteristic of my work. Through my fingertips I extend myself into my painting, whether it is a cuddly puppy, a mama pig, or a delicate rose. I can feel the dew covered petals or soft, furry ears as each stroke of pastel breaths life into the image before me. However, it is only when I feel I have captured the spirit or essence of my subject, am I satisfied."
